IGES (Initial Graphics Exchange Specification) – a neutral (not original for any commercial system) file format for data exchange between various CAD systems. The first format specification was developed in 1980 owning to the efforts of Boeing and General Electric, and in 1981 it was accepted as ANSI standard. The first version was designed mainly for drawing exchange between drawing automation systems. 2.0 version supported data for the finite elements analysis and specific elements of p-c boards. 3.0 version supported user macro commands, and 4.0 – solid bodies in the form of CSG trees, while 5.0 supported the Brep structure. The standard supports three content- and structurally equivalent formats of IGES-files – text (ASCII) with fixed-length lines, compressed ASCII and binary.
