Computer-Aided Manufacturing (CAM) – the terms used for software primarily aimed at developing the programs for computerized numerical control (CNC) machine tools. A geometrical product model, developed in a computer-aided design system (CAD), forms input data to the CAM-system. Interacting with a 3D model in a CAM-system, an engineer defines the motion trajectory for the cutter (CL-data), which then are automatically verified, visualized (for visual verification of its correctness) and processed by a post-processor in order to obtain a control program for a particular machine tool (also called G-code).
