History-based design

Type of parametric design, when parameter values that set new geometric elements are directly and unambiguously dependent on the parameter values of the elements that were built earlier. Changing a parameter of a specific geometric element results in recursive revaluation of the form of all elements, whose parameters depend on the changed parameter. Such a scheme enables effective realization of the regeneration cycle of a parametric model but constrains expressive capacity of parametric design due to blockage of circular references among parameters. A modern alternative to parametric history-based design is variational design.
